ELIMU HAINA MWISHO: SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR YOUNG WOMEN THROUGH FDCS

This transformation initiative by KTO in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST). Elimu Haina Mwisho (EHM), is a dynamic Skills Development Program designed to transform the lives, create a bright future for young women who, had to drop out of school for various reasons, including early pregnancies, marriages, poverty, and societal challenges.

EHM is not just a program; it's a holistic journey of empowerment for young mothers and young women who had to leave education behind due to some challenges. Through the 54 FDCs across the country, the program provides a unique blend of non-formal secondary education, vocational training, life skills, and entrepreneurship. We equip participants not only with knowledge but also with the confidence and skills needed to thrive in both education and the labor market.

Program Components

1. The program opens doors for young women, offering them a non-formal setup to access secondary education, vocational training, and life skills crucial for personal and professional development. Over a flexible two-year course, participants engage in social rehabilitation, skills-building (theory and practice), and short-term internships. Childcare services are provided to support young mothers, ensuring they can fully participate in the program.

2.In the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and harmful practices, EHM equips participants with a comprehensive life skills education covering human rights, gender equality, GBV, HIV/AIDS, and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

3.Beyond academic and vocational skills, EHM focuses on personal development, boosting self-esteem and confidence. Participants emerge not just with knowledge but also the resilience to tackle life's challenges. EHM is also a catalyst for societal change. Through community dialogue activities, we strive for attitude and behavioral change, raising awareness about the challenges young women face.

4.Understanding the challenges young mothers face, EHM ensures childcare services at day-care centers in FDCs. KTO provides support in training childcare workers and supplying materials, making it possible for young mothers to attend courses while their children are well taken care of.

Objectives

1. To create an alternative pathway for Out of School Young Women through FDCs.

2.To strengthen FDCs as training institutions providing an integrated vocational and secondary education program in the non-formal system

3.To empower young women who are skilled enough to employ themselves, become formally employed, or continue with further education

4.Empower young women to be strengthened in their parenthood role, know their rights and how to claim them.

5.Attitude and behavioral change in the local communities towards young women and young mothers.
